Our Singers: Who We Are

SSA Chorus singers consist of retirees and active employees from many areas within the agency. This activity is a volunteer effort on behalf of the agency and administrative leave is granted for offsite performances during work hours. The chorus also performs at awards ceremonies or other special SSA events throughout the year.

The SSA Chorus usually rehearses every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. During a week when a performance is scheduled, there is no rehearsal. Many performances are scheduled close to lunch time, although offsite performances can extend into the afternoon. Offsite performances are scheduled about twice a month and usually within a 30-mile radius from SSA Headquarters. An agency van is provided for singers when the SSA Chorus performs offsite.

Members of the SSA Chorus are required to be members of the Employee Activities Association (EAA). Prospective singers are invited to participate in rehearsals and try out (i.e., audition in a group or individually) to become a member of the Chorus. We encourage anyone who likes to sing and can carry a tune to join us at rehearsals!

Our repertoire varies according to the season or special occasion. We sing Christmas songs during November and December, Patriotic songs for Veterans Day and Fourth of July, and Irish songs for St. Patrick's Day. Throughout the year, our song list includes: show tunes, country music, old favorites from the 40s and 50s, rock and roll hits from the 60s and 70s, movie theme songs, or any other song type that may be requested for a special event. New songs are added only after they have been extensively rehearsed by the chorus. Each singer wears a vest with the SSA Chorus Logo but our singing attire varies with the occasion (from black pants and white shirt for an awards ceremony to jeans and bandanas for country songs).

Sandy Wieprecht is the SSA Chorus Director who prepares the repertoire for each performance, directs rehearsals and performances, and coordinates the musical selections among other leadership duties.
